This is one of the common questions a patient has in his/ her mind before going for the surgery. There is generally no pain during the procedure, because local anesthesia is infiltrated into the scalp which makes the area numb. To make the patient feel comfortable and to decrease the anxiety associated with the procedure, some pre-medications may be given.
We give instructions on how to wash the head for initial 12-14 days. Avoid rubbing, picking or scratching the transplanted area for initial two weeks so that grafts can properly get fixed to the scalp. Washing the head ensures that scabs remain soft and the scalp remains clean to help the healing to take place.
All these tests are done to rule out any infection and to know the general health of the patient. The tests also guide us about the bleeding and clotting profile of the patient.
One may keep the head little elevated while sleeping to reduce the swelling. Application of ice packs and squeezing the swelling from middle of forehead to sideways may help in reducing it.

We prefer giving the first head wash at our clinic where we can guide the patient how to do it after this for next 10-12 days. We prefer that head wash is done with mild medicated shampoo which is diluted as advised by the doctor. After 10-12 days one can use their regular shampoo but we tell our patients to use baby shampoo for some days and then switch to their normal regular shampoo.
